Ballast is a monospaced typeface with unusual mass. Every glyph sits on the same fixed advance, cut with flat terminals and deep counters, so a page of code reads like a wall of set metal. We drew it the way type was once made — each letter a physical sort, cast with real weight, locked into the grid until the press lets go. The family ships in four styles across roman and italic, hinted for small sizes and tuned for long sessions in the editor. Numerals are tabular by default and ligatures stay out of the way. Nothing decorative, nothing loose, until the end of this page — where the composing stick tips, gravity takes over, and the heaviest words drop out of the forme. That is the test we apply to everything we cut: set it, stress it, let it fall. What survives, ships.
